RUSSIAN Music will be to the fore at the NGA’s Fairfax Theatre tomorrow night, when Vincent Plush joins pianist Marcela Fiorillo and Spanish visual artist Miguel Valverde to present a recital largely based on “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Modest Mussorgsky.
Although the program will also include Skriabin Preludes op.22 and Sonate N. 4, op.30., the substance of the program is a performance of the well loved Mussorgsky work, accompanied by a video specially created for the concert by Valverde to conjure up a kind of visit to a virtual museum in which the works of Victor Hartmann, which gave birth to Mussorgsky’s piece, will be exhibited.
Plush’s role is to introduce the Mussorgsky work to the audience, explaining the relationship between Hartmann’s illustrations and Mussorsky’s music.
“Pictures at an Exhibition” was composed in 1874 shortly after the composer attended a posthumous showing of the artwork created by his late friend, Hartmann.
Originally composed for solo piano, the suite depicts Mussorgsky’s stroll through the art gallery and the impressions made by Hartmann’s drawings, paintings and ceramics.
The recital will be, in short, a perfect meeting of art and music.
