Motherhood under the spotlight

IF you liked “Menopause the Musical,” you’ll love “Motherhood The Musical,” the TV promotion for the coming show at The Q goes.

That pretty well sums it up, it’s a girls’ show! And though you can expect there will be plenty of partners and husbands tagging along in a spirit of tolerance, it’s a musical that addresses an exclusively female preserve—motherhood.

And as they’re saying, “it’s a concept that most women can’t wait to embrace – and no childbirth horror story will ever deter them from it…a baby is just the beginning…motherhood is for life.”

Scripted by award-winning singer/songwriter Sue Fabisch, the show features 20 songs including her Top 10 Billboard hit, “The Kids Are Finally Asleep.”

Not surprisingly the 90-minute show is being toured by the Australian producer of “Menopause.”

The formula is similar to that of its successful predecessor, with a quartet of varied characters. There’s Barb, an over-worked, underpaid, mother of five, Brooke, a stressed-out lawyer, Trisha, a single mum struggling to balance work, her family and her divorce and Amy, about to have her first child.

The plot is slim but fitting. As the three friends throw Amy a baby shower, the home-truths about motherhood come out into the open.

It has been described as “a funny, yet loving look at being a mum at any age…It’s climbing the emotional mountain only to find that there’s laundry at the top…It’s discovering how powerful your love can be and how quickly they grow up…It’s about laughing and crying, craziness and calm, smiles and tears… and all before breakfast.”

The show is directed by Terence O’Connell, with musical direction by Vicky Jacobs, set by Shaun Gurton, lighting design by Jason Bovaird, costume design by Adrienne Chisholm and choreography by Sue-Ellen Shook

“Motherhood, the Musical” at The Q, at the rear, 253   Crawford Street, Queanbeyan, August 14-19, bookings to 6285 6290 or www.theq.net.au
