Neighbours get more info on demolitions

NEIGHBOURS will now be when a nearby demolition or development is happening before work begins.

“Previously, as long as a proposed development complied with the relevant rules and exemption criteria, the house next door could be demolished and rebuilt without adjacent neighbours being informed,” Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development Simon Corbell said.

“The changes, passed by the Legislative Assembly earlier this month affect homeowners building development application (DA) exempt single dwellings in existing suburbs.

“From today developers will be required to provide information about the development to adjoining residents before building work starts.”

Amendments were made to the exemption criteria in the “Planning and Development Regulation 2008″, that applies to all DA exempt demolition and DA exempt homes in older suburbs. They are not applicable to the construction of DA exempt single dwellings in new estates.

“After giving the required information to adjoining residents, the proponent is required to complete a form detailing who they’ve contacted and the information provided. Building approval cannot be issued if this form is not provided with the building application,” Mr Corbell said.

“This is not a new form of consultation or an invitation to comment on the development, but rather an opportunity for residents to be informed about development happening nearby.”
