New star in the cinematography scene

Award winner Jimmy Ennett
AT the Australian Cinematographers Society annual awards recently, the National Film and Sound Archive’s CEO Michael Loebenstein announced young Canberra cinematographer Jimmy Ennett as the winner of the 2012 NFSA-ACS John Leake OAM Award for an Emerging Cinematographer.

The award is billed as the only Australian event which celebrates Australians who have excelled in the field of cinematography.

Loebenstein commented: “Cinematographers, producers and directors build a dynamic record of our filmmaking endeavours, reflecting the world we live in.”

He went on to praise Ennett’s commitment to studying the art of 35mm long-form storytelling, “Jimmy’s work in the short form and using digital technology is very promising. In regard to aesthetics, visual storytelling and the use of technology, his work organically bridges form and content”.

Ennett, a final year student at the University of Canberra doing a double degree in Bachelor Media Arts and Production/Arts said he had been a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society for less than a year, but since joining had  met “some of the kindest, most selfless and talented people”.

With support from the Archive, he will complete an internship on Jonathan Teplitzky’s feature film “The Railway Man”, starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman.
