Niels takes his sax to Texas

Niels Rosendahl
THESE are exciting times for Canberra sax player Niels Rosendahl, who’s off in August to study for his Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance at the highly regarded University or North Texas College of Music.

It’s no surprise that Rosendahl is doing well. The son of an opera singer, he has been one of our best and brightest from his earlier years and a with First Class Honours graduate, University Medallist and winner of  the Peter & Lena Karmel Anniversary Award at the beleaguered ANU School of Music.

A student of the School’s John Mackey, he performed and composed for many of the school’s ensembles including its Big Band, Commercial Band and Recording Ensemble.

Rosendahl lived in Edinburgh and London between 2006 and 2008 and  studied with musicians and educators Tommy Smith, Gilad Atzmon, Paul Wertico, Barry Harris, Rufus Reid and Mornington Lockett.

The University orNorth Texas is “arguably one of, if not THE finest of institutions in the world at which to study jazz music,” he says. “Although I’m sad to be leaving the local community (who have been nothing but extremely supportive of my performance career to date) for a few years, I’m really excited about this impending move and furthering my education and international experience.”

He’ll be  presenting a farewell concert on July 28 to help pay for his tuition fees, and “CityNews” will tell you more of that later, but in the meantime, on June 27, he’s  presenting a reunion concert at the Hippo Bar with jazz pianist  (another ANU SoM alumnus)  Michael Azzopardi, who’s now assistant musical director for the Jersey Boys Australia tour, and his wife, jazz violinist Anna Thompson Azzopardi.

“I’d really love the Canberra community to know how much I appreciate all the performance opportunity and development they’ve provided to me, which has led me to where I’m now going,” Rosendahl says.
