Nine groups get Centenary support

NINE new initiatives that are to receive funding for the 2013 Canberra Centenary celebrations have been announced.

The latest funding round allocated more than $250,000 and brings to 19 the number of individuals and organisations to benefit from the ACT Government’s $1 million Centenary Community Initiatives Fund.

“The Centenary Community Initiatives Fund aims to help drive grassroots participation and celebration of the Centenary of Canberra throughout the local community,” said Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.

“This latest round of funding recipients include; The Canberra College of Piping and Drumming, Capital Football, ANU Canberra 100 Community Tapestry, GreatVenue, Photo Access, ACT Fire Brigade Historical Society, Alliance Francais, ‘BMA’ Magazine and Barbara Van Der Linden.

“Members of the community with special needs will particularly benefit from this latest round of funding, and will have the opportunity to participate fully in Centenary celebrations thanks to a venue information website and staff training program to be created by the organisation, GreatVenue.

“The ANU School of Art will drive the creation of the Canberra 100 Community Tapestry, which invites people from all over Australia – and all over the world – to contribute to a giant tapestry that will become a Centenary gift to city of Canberra.

“Capital Football will continue to develop the Kanga Cup in 2013 — as the largest international youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere. In our centenary year this event will bring junior teams to Canberra from our sister cities Nara and Beijing and our friendship city, Dili.

“We will have a torchlight street parade to celebrate decades of service from our fire brigade and other emergency services, Alliance Francais will organise a celebration of French culture in Canberra dating back to our earliest years and a major photographic competition and exhibition will be facilitated by Photo Access.

Canberra artist Barbara Van Der Linden and popular street magazine ‘BMA’ have also receive grants to support Centenary activities.

A total of 112 applications have been received for the fund. Any person or group wishing to submit an application for the fund should call 6205 2420.
