SYDNEY photographer John McRae’s portrait of Margaret Olley has won the inaugural People’s Choice award in National Photographic Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery.
More than 5000 visitors to the exhibition voted and every photograph in the exhibition received multiple votes, evidence, gallery staff are saying, that the new prize, which attracts no prize money, reinforces the democratic credentials of the award.
The final 46 portraits in the exhibition were selected from 1500 entries from around Australia. As previously reported in “CityNews”, judges Louise Doyle, Joanna Gilmour and Blair French, director of Artspace Sydney, had previously awarded the $25,000 cash prize to Melbourne photographer Rod McNicol for his portrait of Jack Charles.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize will tour to Moree Plains Gallery NSW from June to August, the Glass House Gallery in Port Macquarie NSW from September to November, Flinders University Art Museum and City Gallery, SA from December to February and Griffith Regional Art Gallery NSW from March to April.
Entry is free to all venues.
