Parties turn to tourism

THREE parties launched their tourism election policies today, promising everything from new convention centres to bigger, better festivals.

ACT Labor pledged an extra $12.2 million in tourism events and marketing in a bid to attract more visitors to Canberra and to support the 16,000 Canberrans employed in the tourism industry.

Other key promises included extending the blockbuster fund, extra funding for the Canberra Convention Bureau and the National Capital Educational Tourism Project and expanding the Enlighten Festival.

Meanwhile, the Canberra Liberals committed $2 million to seek Commonwealth and/or private sector funding of a new convention centre, establish an independent Canberra Marketing and Tourism Agency, encourage ‘grey nomad’ tourism and develop a comprehensive tourism strategy.

Opposition leader Zed Seselja says the party’s tourism plan will help the local tourism industry “reach its enormous potential.”

The Australian Motorist Party also put forward their vision for the territory’s tourism industry, promising to “work with events organisers to integrate an experience into their programs” and “extend funding to events that have the potential to attract interstate visitors.”

The party say they aim to apply a practical approach to participate with tourism, attraction and business associations to develop a sense of “cooperation, inclusiveness and unity.”
