Political opponents head happily to court

Sport Minister Andrew Barr… off to play netball.
LABOR Sport Minister Andrew Barr, Liberal Brendan Smyth and the Green’s Shane Rattenbury and Amanda Bresnan will take to the court at the Tuggeranong Netball Association’s marathon netball game tomorrow, July 28, to help raise funds for breast cancer support group Bosom Buddies.

The four members of the Legislative Assembly are putting politics aside to join either Team Pink or Team White in a tussle for the TNA Charity Trophy, awarded to the winner of the eight-hour game, starting at 9am.

They will join hundreds of players from across the Canberra-Queanbeyan region who will be participating in the event, hosted by TNA at the Tuggeranong Netball Centre, Were Street, Calwell. The game will be broken into 48 10-minute periods.

Both teams will be composed of squads formed from schools, workplaces, hospitals, Tuggeranong netball clubs, families and public service agencies. Netball ACT, Arawang, Queanbeyan and Belconnen Netball Associations are also sending teams to play.

“By the time the game starts at 9am, all 96 spots will be filled by teams composed of the young, the old, the bold and the brave. In fact, we’ve had to increase the number of periods to cater for a greater than expected number of teams and will use two courts for some periods of play,” TNA president Louise Bilston said.

Entry to the TNA centre will be by gold-coin donation. In addition to the registration fee paid, by each team, there will be cake stalls, face painting and raffles. TNA will also donate the profits made from its Saturday barbecue and canteen to Bosom Buddies.
