Raising money for Sarah’s Quality support

Cancer survivor, five-year-old Sarah Carpenter.
SARAH Carpenter, a five-year-old cancer survivor, will be the guest of honour at today’s Nexis Accountants and Business Advisors Race Day at Thoroughbred Park where all money raised goes to Camp Quality.

The annual event, has a particular special meaning this year; Nexis Accountants & Business Advisors co-director Scott Hammond’s twins Kaitlin and Oliver attended pre-school with Sarah Carpenter and twin Asha.

“The disruption on Sarah and our family has been extremely difficult, but hopefully it will soon be a distant memory,” Sarah’s mum, Kirsti Carpenter said.

“We will never be able to properly express our gratitude at the astonishing level of support we have received from family, friends, the Canberra community and Camp Quality. We are now committed to raising awareness of leukaemia and other serious illnesses effecting children.”

Sarah Carpenter was diagnosed in October last year with a rare and aggressive form of leukaemia known as Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, a cancer more commonly found in adults.

Last month, Sarah completed a stem cell transplant using her own stem cells. Sarah had a final and extremely strong dose of chemotherapy to wipe out any remaining leukaemia cells, before receiving the new stem cells. This cycle was one of the hardest on Sarah, resulting in dramatic weight loss, and further complications.

Today’s race day is Sarah’s first social outing since her diagnosis which forced her into isolation following chemotherapy.
