Review: variety with variety

GOOD quality, variety entertainment is sadly missed in Canberra and so producer Jorian Gardner should be commended for attempting to fill the void.

The pre-show atmosphere was promising, with the well-patronised Courtyard Studio cleverly set up with candlelit tables and deft mood lighting.

MC Jay Sullivan is a genuine talent and his irreverent references to the upcoming ACT election were topical and funny.

Unfortunately, to my eye, at no point were the burlesque dancers erotic and, in fact, when “Sparkles” poured gravy over herself, it was more sickening than stimulating.

A team of hostess ‘kittens” dotted around the performance space did all they could to whoop and encourage the audience.

If Sullivan was the highlight, the other end of the scale was represented by crude “Tammy Paks”, whose awful rendition of “At Last” was a disgrace to the memory of Etta James.

Equally awful was comedian Kale Bogdanovs. His vulgar Boorowa “jokes” drew only embarrassed murmurs. It was announced he is heading to New York. If this performance is any guide, I fear he is headed for a long, cold and hungry winter.

Attention to detail seemed amiss; a “cowgirl” sang of the new dress she was wearing, but lamented its failure to ignite passion. She was wearing jeans!

Maybe this stuff is not my scene, but I know we have immense talent in the music/entertainment industry in Canberra. For me, very little of it seemed present on opening night.
