Rupert, go smell the roses

A COMMITTEE of British pollies decided earlier in the month that Rupert Murdoch wasn’t a fit person to run a media organisation, though history shows he’s made a pretty good fist of it over the years.

There’s no doubt that there was some serious wrongdoing that occurred at the “News of the World” during the hacking scandal. It’s very clear now that the company should have pursued it much more vigorously at the time, but does this translate to Rupert being unfit to run a media organisation?

Will Rupert be inspired to now just give it all away and take a back seat? Of course he won’t.

He will dig in and work hard for his business for as long he can. That’s what he’s done since his early 20s. He’ll work till the day they take him away in a box, and for me that’s the saddest thing about the Murdoch story.

He’s 81 years of age and worked his guts out for six decades. And that’s the saddest thing about this whole story – he’s still in at work slogging it out. Rupert, just give it away, old son! What’s the point of retiring at 92?

Wouldn’t you just chuck your mobile phone away and go fishing? Wouldn’t you just go buy some racehorses, or learn how to paint? Buy another luxury yacht and go sailing. Life is so short and it’s full of wonderful little things… things that I’m sure Murdoch doesn’t ever see.

I was having a ball wading through the fallen leaves in Ainslie the other day, smelling the smells of autumn. I don’t reckon Rupert ever does that. Does he ever have time to just watch the sunset? I think not. How sad.

Whatever the final result of the various phone-hacking inquiries, I just hope that Rupert takes some time to smell the roses.
