For many years, Canberra Grammar School has been running a collaboration with the Ngukurr Arts Aboriginal Corporation that has seen Grammar boys visiting south-eastern Arnhem Land and artists from the region coming to Canberra.
Now the school is holding an exhibition of contemporary Aboriginal art from the Ngukurr community, richly diverse and made up of seven different Aboriginal groups with seven different languages.
At the opening on June 2, guest artist Maureen Thompson, one of only 10 remaining fluent speakers of Mara in the world, talked about her land, culture, history and story behind her artwork, in Mara and English.
This has been a rare opportunity to hear the language spoken and to see artwork by the speakers.
Ngukurr Arts Aboriginal Corporation show at Canberra Grammar School Gallery, 10am-4pm weekdays, and 11am-4pm Saturdays.
