Search for city’s oldest family business

THE search is on for the Canberra’s 10 oldest family businesses.

In the lead-up to Canberra’s Centenary celebrations, Family Business Australia are looking for the oldest family business to recognise and celebrate the mark it’s left on the city.

Family Business Australia CEO Philippa Taylor said Canberra has a dynamic business community dating back to its earliest history.

“Baker Deane & Nutt is one of the oldest law firms in Australia, having provided services to Canberra, Queanbeyan and the surrounding regions for over 140 years. Organisations such as this are committed to their enduring relationship within the Canberra community,” Ms Taylor said .

“If you are part of, or know of a family organisation that you feel may qualify as one of Canberra’s 10 oldest family businesses then we want to know about it. Help us give these businesses the recognition that they deserve.

“Some of the businesses we have identified include Cusacks (1938), Bink Concrete (1961), Ray Gulson (1963) and Cosmorex (1970).”

The 10 oldest family businesses will be announced at the 2012 Family Business Australia Race Day on the May 25, an event that recognises the role family businesses have played in shaping the economic, social and cultural fabric of Canberra.
