Shakespeare in dance and music

CONCERTS combining music and dance have always been hugely popular in Canberra, as collaborations between the CSO and the Australian Ballet have shown, but now Canberra Dance Development Centre and Canberra Youth Orchestra have come up with the idea of presenting a Shakespeare-themed evening of music to dance.

Choreographed and directed by Jackie Hallahan, CDDC will dance to Prokofiev’s dramatic ballet score of “Romeo and Juliet No.2.” Even if readers think they don’t know it, believe me, they do.

CDDC’s director, Jackie Hallahan, comments, “From the beginning this has been an amazing and delightful collaboration with artistic director Rowan Harvey Martin, myself, Canberra Youth Orchestra and Canberra Dance Development Centre all doing our utmost to bring William Shakespeare’s classic story to life through music and dance.”

It’s a chance for full  and part time students of Canberra Dance Development Centre to strut their stuff and for orchestra members to perform a work of such depth and power.

It is a unique opportunity for young dancers to perform with an orchestra of 65 members. This will be a wonderful evening of music and dance and is the first of future collaborations.

“Romeo & Juliet Suite No. 2” at Llewellyn Hall, 7pm, Saturday, June 23. Bookings to 6247 4714 during business hours or 0404 520 455 after hours. Credit card accepted over the phone. $5 for members of CYM and CDDC and family, $10 for the general public if booked, or $15 at the door.
