A GROUP of young people with disabilities recently took on the Canberra Raiders during a special visit to Raiders headquarters.
The kids got a special behind-the-scenes look at a Raiders training session, and were given the opportunity to meet the team, get photographs and autographs.
They took some of the Raiders head-on, with players Sam Williams, Matt McIlwrick, and Joe and Mick Picker organising a game of touch footy with their visitors after seeing how much the day meant to them.
“It means a lot to a lot of the kids to be able to come out and be around the players. They may have a disability, but they still know who the Raiders are and are major fans of the club,” said Manuia Leuii, co-ordinator of the Yurang After School and Holiday Program at Northcott Disability Services, Queanbeyan.
Northcott Disability Services is a not-for-profit organisation that provides support to more than 10,000 children and adults living with a disability and their families and carers across NSW and the ACT. The holiday program provides opportunities for young people with disabilities to enjoy activities such as sports, art and other recreational pursuits with their peers in a safe and relaxed atmosphere.
The program is run from Black Mountain School, O’Connor, and currently has vacancies. For more information call 6297 6899 or email queanbeyan@northcott.com.au
