THE design for the Canberra Centenary Community Tapestry has been launched by Greens MLA and Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly, Shane Rattenbury.
The Canberra Centenary Community Tapestry is to be an original artwork to be woven with hands-on contributions and participation from the Canberra community. The original design for what will eventually be a large-scale work has been developed by Canberra artist Annie Trevillian, who will seek assistance from the wider community to brign this about.
The finished tapestry, intended to celebrate Canberra’s past, present and future, will become part of the permanent art collection the Legislative Assembly for the ACT.
The Community Tapestry is being woven in the Textiles Workshop of the ANU School of Art, but members of the public can take part in different ways.
If you are a weaver, you may wish to assist with weaving the main tapestry, or you may prefer to make a small scale tapestry as part of the project.
The Textiles Workshop welcome visits from individuals and groups to see progress with the tapestry, talk with weavers and to try the art of tapestry weaving first hand. Staff are also prepared to visit groups, workplaces, clubs and schools to demonstrate weaving and talk about the project.
To register interest, arrange a visit for your group or just find out more about the project, email communitycentenarytapestry@anu.edu.au or visit us at www.canberra100tapestry.com
