Tax shock: You pay more in Canberra

LIBERAL spokesperson Brendan Smyth says the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics that reveal Canberra residents pay more tax than the rest of the country is a “shocking burden”.

The data also showed that Canberra recorded the greatest increase in taxation in the country – rising 8 per cent for 2010-11 against the national average increase of 5 per cent.

“Since ACT Labor was elected in 2001, the ACT’s taxes have increased by 90 per cent per capita,” Mr Smyth said.

“Today’s figures show that based on local and State taxes, the ACT’s taxation per capita rose eight per cent in 2010-11 to $3,437 – the highest in the country. We are now taxed around 10 per cent higher than the national average.

“This shows just how hard this ACT Labor Government is hitting Canberrans’ bottom line.

“Cost of living is a major concern, and taxation is a major part of that cost. It’s little wonder why Andrew Barr and ACT Labor so resolutely refuse to include cost of living statements in their budgets.”
