Thousands expected at Folk Festival

THE NATIONAL Folk Festival was launched today in Garema Place with just a small taste of the big things to come over the Easter long weekend.

The festival, which will showcase folk musicians from around the world plus food, wine, markets, dance, comedy and theatre, is expected to attract more than 50,000 people at Exhibition Park over April 5-9. There will also be 200 free workshops in music, dance, arts and crafts.

Managing director Sebastian Flynn said the world’s best musicians will perform including Shooglenifty with their hypnofolkadelia, “Mysticsippi” bluesman Harry Manx, leading Australian guitarist and “bewildered folk” exponent, Jeff Lang, ARIA winner Katie Noonan and Elixir, and another ARIA Award winning chanteuse – Zulya Kamalova and her group The Children of the Underground.

“The great Peter Combe, who is, as far as I’m concerned, the very first Wiggle, is also coming. There’s definitely something for everyone,” said Mr Flynn.

“Folk’s demographic is changing. Young listeners are being drawn to a sound that comes from the common people, which has flowed through the ages into Australian folk culture. Folk music is the voice of the people, raw, honest and authentic.”
