‘Times’ journos face an uncertain three weeks

A “CANBERRA Times” journalist said staff won’t know what the Fairfax Media restructure will mean for the newspaper’s Parliament House press bureau for about three weeks .

In a Tweet,  “Canberra Times” Parliament House journalist Bianca Hall said: “We won’t know for perhaps three weeks what the restructure means. That’s why there’s been no reports. We just don’t know.”

Ms Hall, in a series of Tweets to “CityNews” said the “Australian Financial Review” article, which reported that Fairfax has dumped the bureau and that journalists were told of the move last night, “contains quite a few errors” and no meeting was held with bureau staff.

In a Tweet, Ms Hall said: “Staff at the meeting were not told they would definitely go, as the AFR story notes. They could join the joint bureau.”

According to the “AFR” report, “There was no guarantee the bureau journalists would be redeployed to a merged Canberra bureau of ‘The Age’? and ‘The Sydney Morning Herald’.”

There was no report of these “local” changes in this morning’s “Canberra Times” not, at the time of posting this story, any mention on its Fairfax-based website.

Earlier reports out of Fairfax Media said 20 per cent of the 1900 jobs to be lost will be in editorial, with about 150 to come out of the “metropolitan mastheads unit including ‘The Sydney Morning Herald’, ‘The Age’ and ‘ The Canberra Times’ over the next two to three months”.
