Woman dies after being hit by car

A WOMAN is dead and another injured after being hit by a car while crossing the road yesterday afternoon after finishing their shifts at The Canberra Hospital, where they worked.

Police said a red Toyota Camry station wagon, had been called in to police earlier by an off-duty AFP member after the car was seen driving erratically and collided with another vehicle in Hughes.

The car fled the scene and was spotted by a police on Yamba Drive, where it ran a red light and hit the pedestrians who were crossing the intersection at Bateson Road at about 4.45pm.

The 24-year-old driver was caught by police and taken to The Canberra Hospital where he is assisting police with enquiries.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher confirmed that the women were both Health Directorate employees.

“My sympathy and that of the ACT Government goes out to the family, friends and colleagues of the woman who has died and the others injured in this evenings terrible accident,” she said.

“At a time like this, we as a community should come together and acknowledge the hardworking and dedicated staff of the Health Directorate who have lost a valued staff member tonight in the most tragic of circumstances.”

This is the second person to die on ACT roads this year and the second in a week.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
