Festival to explore the wonders of science

THE Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) will set the scene for all things scientific when National Science Week kicks off this weekend.

The week-long event boasts a family open day, horticulture workshops, science trails and cafe social science discussion forums.

ANBG public programs and events officer Jennifer Salkeld says people will get a “unique behind the scenes experience”.

“We will be opening the doors of the Australian National Herbarium at the Gardens, our production nursery and Seed Bank for tours and demonstrations,” she said.

“Visitors will be able to see how scientists have preserved and identified 1.2 million specimens stored in the Australian National Herbarium, dating back to Joseph Banks’ collection trip on Captain Cook’s voyage to Australia in 1770.”

Down to Earth Horticulture Workshops will also be available for the home gardener.

National Science Week at the Gardens will be held from August 11- 19. For more information visit www.anbg.gov.au/gardens
