Next week gallery chairman Helen Nugent and director, Louise Doyle, will be unveiling their latest portrait acquisition, the gift of Judith Durham, Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley.
If the names are familiar, they should be, they’re The Seekers, one of our most popular singing groups and the first Australian pop music group to achieve major chart and sales success in the UK and the US, with songs such as with “I’ll Never Find Another You”, “A World of Our Own”, “Morningtown Ride”, “Someday, One Day”, “Georgy Girl” and “The Carnival Is Over”, which is still in the top 50 best-selling singles in the UK.
In 1968, they were named as joint Australians of the Year – the only group thus honoured.
The Seekers will all be in town on Thursday, April 18, along with the artist, Helen Edwards, to celebrate this addition to the national collection.
