‘Absolutely Modern’—music and film this weekend

TOMORROW, Saturday, November 30 at 7.30pm in Llewellyn Hall Canberra Youth Orchestra presents an evening of which the centrepiece will be the world premiere of “My Canberra Symphony No. 2” by Marian Budos, commissioned for the Centenary of Canberra.

Also part of the program will be Mendelssohn’s incidental music to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” with    ballet featuring Canberra Dance Development Centre. “Centenary Dreaming,” Bookings to 132 849.

AUSTRALIAN filmmaker Philippe Mora (“Mad Dog Morgan”) will be at the National Film and Sound Archive tomorrow, Saturday, at 2pm to present the Australian premiere of his new film “Absolutely Modern,” a (mockumentary) history of Australian Modern Art, but also a film that reflects Mora’s close and personal connections to some of Australia’s greatest modern painters. Free for Max Pass holders or tickets at the door.

THE archive is hopping. On Sunday, December 1, from 2.30pm – 3.30pm, at the Vinyl Lounge, the newly-renovated theatrette, sound archivists and music gurus Graham McDonald and Thorsten Kaeding will present vinyl classics from the NFSA’s huge collection. Vinyl lovers are welcome bring their favourite records too. FREE.

CANBERRA singing group Rhythm Syndicate will be presenting a Canberra’s Centenary concert from 4-6pm at the Belconnen Arts Centre tomorrow, Saturday, November 30. It’s to be a snapshot of the last 100 years of history with everything from a Beatles medley to a bit of ABBA and James Taylor. Local jazz musician, Michael Dooley, has written a song called “Meeting Place” for the Centenary, to be premiered at the concert.  Bookings to 61733300 or belconnenartscentre.com.au

TOMORROW, Saturday, November 30 at 7.30 pm in  the Artist’s Shed, 14 Foster St, Queanbeyan, and Steve Tyson makes a welcome return visit, with Trev Dunham in support. Tickets $15 / $12 at the door.

THE ubiquitous guitarist, Matt Withers, tells us that he’ll be performing in an afternoon matinee program at Gorman House Arts Centre’s Bogong Theatre as part of the “Sundays in the Park,” and initiative of Gigs Go Local and Canberra100.  3pm Sunday, December 1. Tickets at the door.

ADELAIDE band Lowrider, will be at the Transit Bar tomorrow, Saturday  November 30. They  scored a coup in being asked to perform in the final “Home and Away” episode for 2013 which aired on Wednesday. Tickets at the door.
