ACT libraries cut opening hours

ACT libraries will cut opening hours from December 2 in response to a government request to find operational savings.stock

Director of Libraries ACT Vanessa Little says the new opening times, reduced by thirty hours and expected to save $50,000 this financial year, take into account a “tight financial climate” and growing demand of online resources.

“The three busiest libraries – Dickson, Gungahlin and Woden – will all still open until 8pm one night a week, while Belconnen, Civic, Erindale, Kingston, Kippax and Tuggeranong will all close at 5.30pm on weekdays,” Ms Little says.

“Woden Library will be open on Monday nights, Gungahlin Library on Wednesday nights and Dickson Library on Friday nights.”

All libraries will close at 4 pm on Saturdays, rather than 5.30 pm and library hours will remain the same on Sundays.

Ms Little says there will be “no loss of permanent staff in the changes.”

The changes in operating hours will be communicated through a variety of means, including notices in branches, footers on library notices and receipts and online. For more information please visit
