ONEof the more unusual Centenary-themed exhibitions around town is “100 Years of Light in the Bush Capital” an intimate show of alternative process photography by Rocktavio (Octavio Garcia) in the Arts Lounge at Belconnen Arts Centre.
Garcia draws attention to both “man-made and organic forms, scrambled in the same visual space,” using black & white large format film, pinhole photography and wet-process printing, to creates a disturbingly dream-like effect.
The artist comments, “My photographs aim to challenge the viewer’s visual memory of Canberra by exposing a single piece of film multiple times, to produce a single photograph. In juxtaposing Canberra’s natural and urban landscape, I seek to attract the viewer’s attention to both man-made and organic forms, scrambled in the same visual space, waiting to be analysed.”
Garcia’s says his work is influenced by his Mexican cultural heritage, but that as an immigrant to Australia he also seeks to engage with, explore and understand Australian culture and values.
In 2010 he completed a Diploma in Photo Imaging at Sydney Institute of Technology. He is currently in the third year of a Bachelor of Visual Arts at ANU, majoring in Photography and New Media Arts.
“100 Years of Light in the Bush Capital,” Belconnen Arts Centre, until May 26, 10 AM to 5 PM, Tuesday – Sunday.
