‘Analytical and cold blooded best’ – eX

THE ANU  Drill Hall Gallery is honouring one of our  most important contemporary artists, presenting a major survey exhibition of eX de Medici’s art as part of the Centenary of Canberra celebrations. “This is eX de Medici at her most analytical and cold blooded best,” the gallery say s—and that’s saying something.

de Medici has been listed in the Top 50 of Australia’s most interesting (and collectable) artists since 2008, and has traversed a range of media in her career, earning a degree of notoriety for her tattoo art.

The galley describes her  work as  “shocking and confronting,” saying  “her explorations of violence at a personal, corporate and national level are offset against life at its most fragile.”
Notoriety apart, the gallery is quick to note that  she has also been an Artist-Fellow with the CSIRO Department of Entomology and has worked as an Official War Artist in the Solomon Islands.

Each of de Medici’s exhibitions since 2000 has been structured around a major watercolour with smaller supporting works. This show, which  brings together most of these paintings ‘to make visible an ongoing and forensic examination of contemporary society,’ is curated by Jenny McFarlane, who recently emailed me about the show with a simple comment: “What can I say?”

A publication on de Medici and a limited edition t-shirt designed by the artist will be produced in conjunction with the exhibition.
