Artistic romp through fatherhood

CANBERRA artist Steve Roper has a distinctive ‘cartoon’ style that covers painting, drawing and sculptural ceramics, so you never know quite what he’s going to do next. Over 30 years of creating art Roper has explored landscape painting, abstraction and domestic scenes in a search to create art which is “personal and emotionally authentic”.

Now under the title “In Fatherhood: to infinity & beyond,” he journeys through the life of blokes, not excluding himself, and focuses on focusing on “blokes and their stuff, being mates, courting, having a family and having pets.”

Much of the work in this show, he says, is a celebration of love and relationships, but the elements of human frailty and self-deception come out too, all expressed with a strong undercurrent of humour.

“One of the great things about exhibiting this work is seeing the enjoyment and connection people can get out of it”, Roper says, “Many people recognise the behaviours and attitudes displayed by the characters I portray and maybe the appearance of themselves or their loved ones.”

The show opens on Thursday at one of Roper’s favourite venues, Watson Arts Centre and finishes, fittingly, on Fathers’ Day.
