Arts in the City: Loud week for music

Salut! Baroque (1)SALUT! Baroque (pictured)  believes that music is “architecture for the ears” and is presenting a concert of vocal and instrumental music composed by Vivaldi, Caldara, Monteverdi, Merula and Luzzaschi for some of Italy’s architectural masterpieces. “Chiesa e Palazzo” is at Albert Hall, 7.30pm, Friday, August 9.  BEFORE that, Art Song Canberra is presenting “The New English Renaissance”, by Duo Trystero (tenor Robert Macfarlane and guitarist Aleksandr Tsiboulski) in Wesley Music Centre. It will feature music written for Peter Pears and Julian Bream by Benjamin Britten, William Walton and Michael Tippett, as well as the cycle “Kobitotachi” (Lovers) by Australian David Kotlowy. Tickets only at the door, 3pm, on Sunday August 4.

ON Wednesday, August 7, piano students from the studios of Elena Nikulina and Natasha Tkachenko will perform works from the Baroque period to the 20th century in the Wesley Music Centre Lunchtime Live series, 12.40pm-1.20pm. Paper note entry or concession $2.

A MEMBER of the judiciary, admonishing a young offender, suggested she pay a visit to the performance “Jack Charles v The Crown” at The Playhouse to see how rehabilitation can be done – mind you, even the ebullient Charles would admit it took him a long time to get it right.

PLAYING Field Studio’s 2013 Community Arts Residency Program is open to applicants interested in exclusive use of the its studio space for one week in October to develop or explore a creative practice. The residency includes a one-off grant to assist with materials for use during the project. Inquiries to 0402 597959.

CANBERRA Photographic Society’s fifth annual “Out There” is at the Watson Arts Centre until August 11. The title refers to photographers and photographic artists going beyond their local surroundings and comfort zones in the search of images that reflect their personal interests and ideas. Thursday to Sunday 10am-4pm.
