Arts in the city: Sunday promises plenty of music

  • IN an amazing achievement, the 300th “Musical Offering” event for 2013 will take place from 1.30pm-4.30pm on Sunday, October 27, starting in the Sculpture Garden, NGA and moving via the High Court foyer to the Portrait Gallery. The hefty line-up includes Robyn Archer, Tobias Cole and The Trumpet Club. It’s free.

    INDIE-folk group Sidney Creswick is collaborating with Tuggeranong Arts Centre’s hip-hop dance crew Fresh Funk for “I Thought I Was Not Alone” – featuring “melodic tales, passionate choreography and a modern love story”.   • SAMMY Moynihan is embarking upon a modern retelling of Ibsen’s massive epic “Peer Gynt” in, of all places, Smiths Alternative in Civic. Moynihan identifies with the questing Peer as he asks himself: “What do I do now?” It’s on at 8pm, October 31 and November 1-2. Bookings to 6247 4459.
  • THE fourth “Come Alive” Festival of Museum Theatre will run daily in the Visions Theatre of the National Museum, noon-6pm, from Monday, October 28, to Friday, November 1. Students from Orana School, Stromlo, Melrose and Calwell High as well as Merici, Dickson, Canberra and St. Francis Xavier Colleges and Girls’ Grammar, have chosen an object, character or event from the museum’s collection and created a play.   • THE 17th Japanese Film Festival will be at the Capitol Cinema in Manuka, October 30-November 3. All eyes are on Japan’s contender for the upcoming Academy Awards, “The Great Passage”. Program and bookings at japanesefilmfestival.net
  • ON Sunday, October 27, at 3pm, 11 Wesley music scholars will perform a variety of works for voice, violin, cello, flute, oboe, bassoon, guitar and harp. Tickets at the door. Then, on Wednesday, October 30, the Royal Military College Brass Quintet will perform in the “Lunchtime Live Series”, 12.40pm-1.20pm.
  • ARIA Award-winning pianist Sally Whitwell has composed “a kind of humorous call-to-arms for feminists” to perform with soprano Nadia Piave and Kompactus called “Walk the Walk”. All Saints Anglican Church, Ainslie, 3pm Sunday, October 27. Tickets at the door.
