Birthday gift to Queanbeyan unveiled

APPROXIMATELY 1,000 new trees will be planted along the verges of Canberra Avenue as part of the ACT’s 175th Birthday Gift to Queanbeyan.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher today joined the Mayor of Queanbeyan Councillor Tim Overall to present the gift, a mix of native and exotic tree species including Inland Scribbly gum, She oak, Brittle gum, Atlas cedar, Turkey oak and Pin oak.

Most of the new trees have been provided by Yarralumla Nursery and will be cared for by the ACT Government to help them get established. The new trees will be marked by a sign unveiled by Ms Gallagher today, which reads “Queanbeyan 175th Anniversary Tree Plantings 1838-2013, Gift from the ACT.”

“The people of ACT and Queanbeyan have fostered a special relationship which dates back to when Canberra was working to establish itself as a city for people to call home,” says Ms Gallagher.

“Queanbeyan was where Canberrans went to shop and for entertainment, and their community advocated for our city to become the nation’s capital.

“Last month I was honoured to accept an armillary sphere sundial from Queanbeyan as a gift to Canberra for our centenary year. The sundial, which is located at the National Arboretum Canberra, and now our gift of trees will endure as symbols of the strong ties between our two cities.”

Queanbeyan City Council Mayor Tim Overall thanked the ACT for the gift saying as the trees grew, they would become a very strong and visible sign of the connection between Queanbeyan and Canberra.

“This is such a thoughtful gift and I thank the ACT very much on behalf of all our residents. The tree corridor will not only beautify the entrance into Queanbeyan from the ACT, but will be representative of the close bond between the cities, creating yet another enduring link of friendship.”
