ONE of the most endearing things about the former US Secretary of State, Madeline Albright, was that she absolutely loved brooches, so much so that she exhibited them at the Smithsonian Institution in an exhibition titled “Read my Pins.”

Back in 2011 the ANCA Gallery in Dickson took the logical next step by proving that the brooch is an art form, through its show, “PIN Wonderwall.”

ANCA Gallery now has an irresistible new exhibition of artist-made brooches, “PINup,”  showcasing miniature wearable works by local, regional and interstate artists exhibition opening tonight from 6-8pm. All are welcome.

Artists enthusiastically took the concept art, liking the idea of reducing scale and honing in on “a wearable, miniature platform” tht appealed to  sculptors, printmakers, painters, silversmiths, photographers, wood-workers and glass artists alike.

And just in case you think it might all be a bit trivial, (though this writer willingly confesses a passion for broohes too) ANCA’s Jan Falsone assures us that “PINup provides an opportunity for artists, who may not necessarily always work on a miniature scale, to create experimental work that expands their practice in new and often playfully ways.”

So there, the 40 or so artists whose work is on show need feel no guilt whatsoever about having a good time with their art.

Emerging and established makers are embraced in the project, with the artists participating in PINup

numbering around 40, and including Marianna del Castillo, Ampersand Duck, Jacqueline Bradley, Daniel

Edwards, Byrd&Hoon, Kendal Murray, Sarah Farquhar-Still, Ali Aedy, Rosalind Lemoh, Nicci Haynes and

many more.
