LOCAL businesses have been recognised for efficient energy, waste and water management and recycling strategies at an awards breakfast this morning.
The 2013 ACTSmart Sustainable Business Awards highlight sustainability initiatives and illustrate Canberra’s commitment to its emission reduction targets.
“The quality of entries this year has been outstanding, with some accredited sites reducing waste to landfill by up to 90 per cent over the past year,” Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell, said.
“The number of those involved in reducing waste in our region has grown steadily each year, with 664 individual sites participating in the program since it began in August 2009.
“To date more than 37,000 staff have access to the recycling program in both Canberra and Queanbeyan.”
The minister said the ceremony ceremony also provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the ACTSmart Business Energy and Water program, which works with small business to determine possible energy and water-saving measures.
“The ACTSmart Sustainable Business program is a prime example of the ACT Government partnering with the business community to promote environmentally-friendly practices throughout our region,” Mr Corbell said.
