Celebration of Murray-Darling Basin

TOMORROW Belconnen Arts Centre will host the culmination events of “One River”, the year-long Centenary of Canberra project that has enabled communities throughout the Murray-Darling Basin to interact with their waterways and landscapes.

slide_oneriver2This Centenary project has highlighted Canberra’s position as the largest city in the Murray-Darling Basin and continues the theme of a ‘re-imagined’ capital.

The resulting artworks and community projects will be installed across the Arts Centre and its surrounding landscape.

Tomorrow we’ll see work created by each participating community throughout the Basin, including towns Augathella, Bourke, Mildura and Lakes Mungo, Hattah and Hawthorn, as well as Narrandera, Albury-Wodonga, Mitchell, Murray Bridge, Goolwa and Canberra.

Belconnen Arts Centre will be transformed into an interactive arts space with light projections, water based art, fire installations, music and interactive art, put together by artists like Andrew Hull, Vic and Sarah McEwan, Jude Roberts, Kim Chalmers and Sally Hederics, Heidi Kenyon, John Shortis and Moya Simpson, Carmel Wallace, Margaret Worth and Bill ‘Swampy’ Marsh.

“One River” proposes that the rivers of the Murray-Darling Basin are a part of our ‘common wealth’ and that no parts of this vast terrain are as remote as we might imagine.

The One River project was high on the priority list of Creative Director of the Centenary of Canberra, Robyn Archer, who says, “Despite the continuing divisiveness over water usage and allocation throughout the system, I had always believed that widespread communities throughout that system could find a common ground in shared stories of river life.”

“It’s heartening that we can use the occasion of the capital’s centenary year to record and disseminate these stories,” adds Archer.

The project was launched in Goolwa in October 2012 as part of the Regional Arts Australia national biennial conference and projects have taken place throughout the Basin during 2013.

“One River” finale, 4-8pm, at Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen, Saturday,  August 24. A free Centenary of Canberra event. All welcome.
