“CANBERRA Centenary — what’s so great about it?” may sound like the theme for a symposium, but the exhibition of the same name, opening today at Belconnen Arts Centre is anything but that.
In fact it’s a group exhibition by local and interstate artists showcasing different perspectives on the nation’s capital by local and interstate artists. Canberra’s unique status as a designed city is examined and the artists explore how administrative decisions have impacted on the local environment, the landscape and quality of life.
Ruth Faerber and Angela Coombs Matthews (from NSW), Carolyn Canty (from TAS), James Pasakos (from VIC), Peter Van De Maele and Barak Zelig (from the ACT) and Theo Tremblay (from QLD) take different slants on the nation’s capital.,Each has lived and worked in Canberra in the past.
The exhibition curator is Canberra’s Barak Zelig, who invited artists from different states to express their views on Canberra and the Centenary from their locations outside the Territory.
