Chifley blaze sparked from cooking

THREE residents had to evacuate after their stove top set alight while they were cooking in their Chifley home early this morning.

The residents were cooking in the single storey, Allwood Street residence and had stepped away from the stove when the fire alarm sounded.

The three residents all safely self evacuated and contacted Emergency Triple Zero at 1.30am.

Two fire pumpers, a Command Officer and the Breathing Apparatus Van were called to the scene and conducted ventilation and air monitoring operations.

Fire damage was contained to the stove with the remainder of the three bedroom house sustaining smoke damage.

ACT Ambulance Service intensive care paramedics assessed and treated one female patient for smoke inhalation with transport to hospital not required.

ACT Fire & Rescue says the incident serves as an important reminder to not “stop looking while you’re cooking” and to have a well maintained smoke alarm.
