City spraypainter caught on CCTV

A 27-year-old Bonython man was arrested overnight for spraying graffiti on a number of businesses in the City area.

Police afp copsA member of Police Operations observed a man on CCTV writing graffiti on a store on Bunda Street, just after midnight last night and radioed the nearby police station.

The Operations member continued to watch the man on CCTV, providing attending police with his exact location.

The man was arrested and taken to the station, then released a short time later when his identity was confirmed.

He will be summonsed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.

North District Superintendent Brett Kidner said the CCTV cameras were “a valuable tool in the fight against crime in the CBD”.

“With ACT Policing Operations members monitoring the CCTV cameras throughout the city, our chances of apprehending offenders in a timely fashion is greatly increased,”Superintendent Kidner said. “This incident is a perfect example of the benefits this technology offers.

“These cameras are a great investment for one of Canberra’s most densely populated areas, both in a residential and commercial sense. This matter should act as a deterrent to others who might consider committing criminal offences in Civic”.
