THE ACT Government is capping the size of supermarkets at local shopping centres across Canberra for the first time.
Supermarkets will be restricted to 1,000 square metres of floor space under a draft variation to the Territory plan.
Minister for Sustainable Development Simon Corbell says the Labor party is honouring its election commitment to “provide better protection for local supermarkets.”
“This is designed to protect small, independent supermarket retailing and support the role of local shops as a key part of providing convenient shopping to residents in a local neighbourhood,” Mr Corbell said.
He says the changes will come into effect immediately.
“We know that Canberrans like to support local businesses that are also located close to their homes for convenience, and DV 304 also contains provisions to allow for future growth and development,” he said.
“This proposal encourages the development of mixed-use buildings in the centres to cater for growing demands for retail, commercial and residential uses that will boost the economy of the centre and make them more vibrant.”
