Cross-arts festival in Centenary spotlight

CANBERRA’S emerging artists will have their moment in the Centenary spotlight when the annual “You Are Here” festival returns next week.

The curated festival, which showcases the best of Canberra’s independent and experimental arts and culture, will run from March 14-24, with more than 60 events in Canberra’s city spaces. The program features theatre, music, visual arts and performance events, and all events are free.

City spaces that will be occupied this year by You Are Here include The Watch House in Garema Place and the former Fletcher Jones store on the Northbourne Ave – London Circuit corner, along with nearby alleyways and car parks.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says Canberra is lucky to have the talent and exuberance of the festival.

“You Are Here represents the youthful energy which has been alive in Canberra for decades, encourages new work from local artists and also embraces the return of former Canberrans,” Ms Gallagher says.

Events include the festival’s first overnight musical performance event at Canberra Museum and Gallery, and a Christmas celebration in Tocumwal Lane hosted by Santa Claus. Another event, Eulogy for a City, is a guided walking tour of forgotten sites in the CBD that were once culturally significant – pubs, clubs, cafes and venues.
