Design from the non-artist’s perspective

Centenary_Tapestry_image_by_Yasmin_MasriHERE’S another big Centenary event.

The “Designing a Capital: Crafting a Nation” forum is a three-session discussion of some serious contemporary subjects and issues in Australian craft and design.

The event will be presented in the “elegant and cutting-edge design environment” of Palace Electric in the NewActon precinct.

Three of Canberra’s leading figures in craft and design will chair the forum, with contributions by emerging and established designers, entrepreneurs, journalists, artists, curators and businesspeople.

Peter King, Green Growth Partnerships and Design Integration Manager, CSIRO, will explore the idea of Canberra becoming a future “world design capital”. ABC 666 radio presenter, Genevieve Jacobs joins the panel as a writer for arts and horticulture magazines, while Director of Molonglo Group Nectar Efkarpidis, described as a former skateboard-riding and investment banker and not your average property developer,  it is the debate as a proponent of sustainable developments at Nishi NewActon.

“Good urban design encompasses everything from architecture, environmental sustainability, integrated public art and community engagement,” says Avi Amesbury, executive director of Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre.

One very current example of design that enriches communities is seen through the work of textile artist and Head of Textiles at ANU School of Art Valerie Kirk, who has overseen the creation of the Centenary of Canberra Community Tapestry.

Bookings essential to gwenyth.macnamara@craftact.org.au or 6262 9333.
