Dickson plan underway, but what about Calwell?

AS the ACT Government claims credit today for getting the ball rolling on its Dickson “master plan”, the Opposition wants it to develop a similar plan for Calwell.

ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell announced the approval of planning changes today which he said would “deliver on the master plan” for the Dickson shopping centre.

Meanwhile, Liberal MLA Andrew Wall had announced earlier that he would introduce a motion in the Legislative Assembly tomorrow calling on the Government to develop a master plan for the Calwell shopping centre and nearby Tuggeranong Homestead.

The Dickson master plan includes more residential developments, including some up to six stories high, as well as improved connections between pedestrian walkways, more “active frontages” and rules to prevent new buildings overshadowing existing ones.

The ACT Government is also currently negotiating the sale of car parks to allow new supermarkets to be built in Dickson, which Mr Corbell said had grown into “an important community hub”.

Mr Wall has criticised the Government for not making Calwell a similar priority, saying Tuggeranong Homestead “is of significant cultural, heritage and environmental value to the entire Tuggeranong region”.

“There are a number of opportunities for the Calwell precinct, including the historic Tuggeranong Homestead, to reach its full potential and a master plan will help guide this process,” Mr Wall said in a statement.
