A DRUNK driver who crashed his 4WD through a petrol pump and into the shopfront of a Belconnen service station last night had already lost his license for drink-driving, police revealed today.
The 38-year-old Belconnen man was also found to have a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit when he was breath-tested at Belconnen Police Station shortly after the crash.
Police say the man lost control of his black Nissan Z51 Murano as he entered the Shell service station at around 10pm, hitting a petrol bowser and crashing into the Coles shop-front. No-one was injured during the incident.
Acting Superintendent of Traffic Operations Rod Anderson said it was “extremely fortunate” that there wasn’t a worse outcome.
“I’m astounded at the actions of this man,” A/Supt Anderson said. “Driving intoxicated into an area full of combustible liquids has the potential to create a real disaster, particularly in one of our more populated areas.”
“The community has every right to be outraged by his behaviour.”
The man will face ACT Magistrates Court, where he will be charged with driving whilst over the prescribed concentration of alcohol and driving whilst disqualified.
The police encourage members of the public who see anyone they think is driving intoxicated, or driving in a dangerous manner, to report it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
