QUEANBEYAN artist Debra Boyd-Goggin has been named winner of this year’s non-acquisitive Queanbeyan City Council Regional Art Awards for her graphite and charcoal drawing, “Faces”.
This year Queanbeyan artists were “encouraged” though not obliged to reflect on the theme of “Aspects of Queanbeyan Heritage.”
Other winners were Lauren Wakley, who won the Young Artist Award for her digital painting “Sun Tribute” and Arnold J. Williams, who won the Indigenous Artist Award for his painting “Papunya, home of the honey ants”.
Commendations went to glass artist Mel George for her work “Henderson Road” and to Amanda Edwards for her drawing “Twilight on the Rotunda.”
Queanbeyan City Council Mayor Tim Overall announced the winners in a ceremony at The Q last night. He said the focus was on emerging to mid-career artists and that the award aimed to highlight, expose and promote the myriad of talented visual artists residing in the wider Queanbeyan region.
This year, marking Queanbeyan’s 175th birthday celebrations, the awards, which are sponsored by the council, had an increased prize pool of $4500 and two additional categories for Youth and Indigenous Artist.
This year’s judge was the famed ceramic artist, Anita McIntyre, who turns out to have been born in Queanbeyan.
