Duffy and Lyneham our ‘safest schools’

DUFFY Primary School and Lyneham High School have been recognised for their anti-bullying programs in a competition run by the Commonwealth Government.

The “Safe Schools are Smart Schools” competition was run ahead of today’s National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence.

Entrants were judged on their strategies for dealing with bullying, cyberbullying, violence, discrimination, harassment or mental health, the winners receiving a $5000 voucher to purchase school resources, as well as a “ClassMovies starter pack” to produce a video about their school safety initiatives.

Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann said there was “no place for bullying or violence” in or directly outside Canberra’s schools.

“Everyone has a role to play in ensuring our students are safe at school,” she said in a statement today. “Principals, teachers, parents and local communities can work together to make our schools safe, supportive and respectful.”

Ms Brodtmann congratulated Duffy Primary for their ‘GOTCHA!’ program, which aimed to reward positive and safe behaviour.

“Duffy Primary has demonstrated a strong commitment to making sure students at their school do feel safe and supported,” she said. “I encourage all schools in the ACT to be inspired by this success and make a similar commitment to implementing safe school policies and activities.”

The Safe Schools are Smart Schools competition was open to all Government, Catholic and Independent primary and secondary schools in Australia.
