Five hospitalised after food poisoning outbreak

FIVE people have been hospitalised and more than 20 treated for food poisoning, according to ACT health.

Chief Health Officer Paul Kelly told ABC radio that Calvary and Canberra hospitals were receiving cases of severe gastroenteritis as late as 10pm yesterday, and knew of 22 cases.

Dr Kelly says the 22 people ate at the same Canberra restaurant at various times over the weekend, but has not confirmed which eatery is to blame.

The restaurant closed voluntarily on Sunday.

UPDATE:

ABC News is reporting that the people suffering food poisoning all ate at The Copa, a Brazilian-style barbecue restaurant at Dickson which only opened last week.

ACT Health has now confirmed that the food poisoning is a result of salmonella contamination, although testing of the restaurant and the food has not found any problems so far.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher refused to officially name the restaurant, according to the ABC, saying it isn’t clear at this stage whether food laws have been broken.
