Green light for Woolies to buy Hawker IGA

WOOLWORTH’S takover of the Supa IGA supermarket in Hawker has been given the green light by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The ACCC said it would not oppose the move because the local market included “several supermarket offerings.”

The Hawker Supa IGA’s closest competitor, Coles, is located at the nearby Jamison Centre, which also has an ALDI.

In its statement on today’s decision, ACCC chairman Rod Sims said: “After an extensive investigation and rigorous consultation with interested parties, the ACCC concluded that the proposed acquisition would not result in a substantial lessening of competition in any market.”
