Acting on a tip-off received from members of the public, Criminal Investigations detectives executed a search warrant at the residence at 9am today, finding the 49-year-old male resident in the backyard who, when confronted by police, dropped a loaded firearm.

Police proceeded to search the premises and seized two replica firearms, an amount of ammunition and a small amount of illicit drugs suspected to be cannabis and MDMA.

The man was arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House where he was charged with unauthorised possession of firearm and possession of ammunition. He will face the ACT Magistrate’s Court at a later date.

Detective Acting Sergeant Anna Wronski said this is an example of ACT Policing’s dedication to removing illicit firearms from Canberra streets.

“The seizure of this hand gun followed information provided by the public, just over one week after we announced the crackdown on illicit firearms in the ACT. This shows that our community is also committed to assisting ACT Policing in getting weapons out of the hands of criminals,” Detective Acting Sergeant Wronski.

Anyone who has any information in relation to this investigation and is yet to speak to police is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
