Hottest January day on record

CANBERRA has recorded its hottest January day on record, with the Bureau of Meteorology recording a temperature of 41.6 degrees Celsius at 2pm.

The previous record of 41.4 degrees was set on January 31, 1968.

Today is also the second hottest day ever recorded in the territory, with the hottest day set on February 1, 1968 when temperatures reached 42.2 degrees.

Strong winds are also being recorded, with gusts topping 78 kilometres per hour.

A total fire ban is in place for the ACT until midnight and the danger level is severe.
