Man allegedly drugged and held captive

POLICE officers found a man yesterday who claims to have been held in a Reid apartment against his will and forced to take drugs, while investigating a suspected car theft.

Police afp copsPolice charged two men with forcible confinement in relation to the incident, and the alleged captive was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

The man approached police and asked for their help while they were conducting further investigations into what they believed was a simple case of car theft, telling them he had been held in the flat  and “forced to ingest a large amount of medication and other unknown substances”.

Looking into reports of two men suspiciously loitering around a car in the Bega Court flats at about 7am yesterday, City Patrol officers noticed a white Toyota Yaris being driven by a man they recognised and attempted a traffic stop.

Police say the man accelerated away and they opted not to give chase as they were confident of knowing his identity.

Officers saw the car parked at Bega Court at around 11.30am and arrested a 24-year-old man who they believed was the driver, inside an one of the flats in the complex.

It was then that the alleged prisoner came forward with his story.

A 39-year-old Reid man was arrested and charged with forcible confinement and aggravated robbery, while the 24-year-old man has been charged with several traffic offences and forcible confinement.

Both men are expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning and police will be opposing bail.
