Man found dead in jail’s health centre

ACT CORRECTIONS Minister Shane Rattenbury has offered condolences to the family and friends of a man who died last night inside the Hume Health Centre, part of the ACT’s jail.

Mr Rattenbury said he believed the 30-year-old caucasian man from Lyneham was not serving a sentence for a criminal conviction, but was being held on remand at the Alexander Maconochie Centre, and had been in custody for about a month.

He was found dead shortly before 7pm inside a cell in the Hume Health Centre, and was last seen alive about one hour earlier.

Corrections staff tried to resuscitate the man until ambulance officers arrived.

Police have said the cause of death is still unknown and that there were no specific injuries or suspicious circumstances to report. A post-mortem is being conducted on Friday.

The deceased man’s family have been notified and his name is being withheld at their request, according to Mr Rattenbury.

“I’d also like to acknowledge correctional and health staff for their response to the incident,” he said, adding that all staff and detainees were being offered ongoing support.

The Corrections Minister could not comment on whether he was completely satisfied with the response from corrections staff due to the matter being under investigation by police, and could not say how long an internal review would take.

He also predicted there would be considerable media interest in the case and asked members of the media to respect the family’s privacy and the coronial inquest.

A separate investigation by police detectives is also underway.
